Welcome to the Evening Standard’s LIVE blog dedicated to the latest news and rumours following transfer deadline day.

The window has slammed shut, and Michy Batshuayi has sealed a dramatic late loan transfer from Chelsea to Crystal Palace.

The Belgian dominated much of deadline day after Denis Suarez completed his respective loan move to Arsenal from Barcelona, and Palace finally got their man in a late announcement after the window closed at 11pm.

Batshuayi was at one stages weighing up a short-term move to West Ham, before it emerged that Tottenham had held talks with Chelsea over a permanent deal, but the Blues' demands of £35-40million put the buffers on that.

I had no idea if Palace had signed Batshuayi - Hodgson

Photo: Getty

Crystal Palace manager Roy Hodgson admits he only knew the club had officially signed Michy Batshuayi when he woke up on Friday morning.

The Eagles swooped in before the January transfer deadline to sign the Chelsea striker on loan until the end of the season.

But after a long day of negotiating, Hodgson said he went to bed with the deal still hanging in the balance.

"I went to bed not knowing [if it had been completed]," said 71-year-old Hodgson.

"But it was a pleasant surprise to wake up to [sporting director] Doug Freedman's text that it had been done."

Pochettino hits out at press after Spurs fail to add to squad

Photo: Getty

Tottenham coach Mauricio Pochettino vented his frustration after accusing the media of 'manipulating' his answers in a heated press conference on Friday.

For a second successive window, Spurs failed to add to their squad as top four rivals Chelsea and Arsenal both brought in reinforcements.

Ahead of Saturday's lunchtime kick-off against Newcastle, Pochettino was unhappy that he was not willing to add to his squad after the January transfer window deadline passed.

"I want to be clear with you and everyone," he said.

"If you twist my answer, like many, many times, and manipulate my answer like you sometimes do... and make me look like 'Oh I am so happy!', that I do not want to sign [players] or add more quality and not win the Carabao Cup or FA Cup.

"Please, enough is enough. I am happy to work with my squad because I believe I have a very good squad.

"Another thing is we are always open to add more quality because in football, always you need to improve. If we can't add more quality, I am not going to be sad."

Dortmund sign Alcacer on permanent deal

Borussia Dortmund have exercised their option to buy to sign Paco Alcacer on a permanent deal from Barcelona.

Alcacer has been in sensational form in the Bundesliga this season, scoring 12 goals in just 14 appearances - of which only five have been starts.

And the German league leaders have now agreed to pay a fee of €23m (£20.1m) with an additional €5m (£4.6m) in variables to secure the Spain international's services permanently.

Barcelona will also take five per cent of any future fee if the 25-year-old is sold on.

Marouane Fellaini has left Manchester United to join Chinese Super League side Shandong Luneng.

The Belgium international signed a new and improved deal until 2020 after becoming a key figure at Old Trafford under Jose Mourinho.

But since Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s arrival in the Old Trafford dugout he has featured only once, as a late substitute, in United's seven Premier League games.

Fellaini scored 22 times for United and helped the club to win the Emirates FA Cup, FA Community Shield, League Cup and UEFA Europa League.

A short statement from United read: “Everybody at United thanks Marouane for his service and wishes him well for the future as he completes his move to Shandong Luneng Taishan FC in China.”

Arsenal head coach Unai Emery today claimed new signing Denis Suárez will find it “easy” to adapt to English football and had confidence he will deliver if selected to start against Manchester City.

The Gunners travel to Etihad Stadium on Sunday having won just one of their last seven visits but buoyed by a week in which they moved into the Premier League’s top four on goal difference and secured the loan capture of Suárez from Barcelona.

Emery revealed the 25-year-old trained alone yesterday after completing his move to north London but joined up with the group for the first time today.

And the Spaniard said: “Firstly he knows the language - he can speak English, which is important for us. Secondly, he played at Manchester City with the youth teams. He has a big experience in Spain, at Sevilla, at Villarreal, where he played in a semi-final against Liverpool in the Europa League. “After, he played with Barcelona, not in the first XI a lot of times, but he helped them there and played in the Champions League, in an important team with important players. I think for him it’s easy to adapt with us.

“We need every player to be OK and with the mentality to play on Sunday. We have maybe some injuries but we have other players who can play and help the team with their qualities, with the performances, with their condition. On Sunday, I am positive about the possibility of playing different players.”

Ainsley Maitland-Niles is a doubt for the game after missing this morning’s session with a knee problem but Laurent Koscielny (jaw) and Henrikh Mkhitaryan (metatarsal) are available.

Spurs still keen to offload Janssen

Tottenham still hope to offload Vincent Janssen this month after talks with Real Betis and Schalke broke down before last night’s transfer deadline.

Photo: Getty

Neither wanted to meet Tottenham’s desired loan fee for Janssen and Spurs will try to find a club in Portugal, Russia or China for the 24-year-old.

The Portuguese window closes on Saturday, while Russian clubs have until February 22 to sign players and Chinese clubs until the end of the month.

Janssen, who cost £17million from AZ Alkmaar in 2016, has been playing for the Under-23s since foot surgery at the beginning of the year.

The Holland forward is popular at the club and his relationship with Mauricio Pochettino remains cordial but the Tottenham manager would prefer to use a youngster as back-up for the first team.

Palace hoping Batshuayi could face Fulham

Crystal Palace were today waiting for Michy Batshuayi to arrive at the club before deciding if he would go straight into their squad against Fulham on Saturday.

Batshuayi joined Palace on loan from Chelsea until the end of the season after his future was finally resolved after yesterday’s 11pm transfer deadline.

The Belgium international, who was on loan at Valencia, was due to arrive in London this morning. The deal was ratified by the Premier League in time for him to face Fulham and Palace manager Roy Hodgson was today due to weigh up whether to name him on the bench at Selhurst Park tomorrow.

Batshuayi was left in limbo for most of yesterday as Chelsea explored selling him to Everton and loaning him out to West Ham and Real Betis. A late move to Tottenham was even mooted before he was offered to Palace last night.

The deal was finally ratified in the early hours of the morning and Palace will pay a £1million loan fee for the 25-year-old.

Solskjaer used Ronaldo to convince Martial to stay at United

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer used Cristiano Ronaldo in his pitch to convince Anthony Martial to stay at Manchester United.

Solskjaer played a pivotal part in the France forward’s decision to sign a new five-year contract this week – ending months of uncertainty about his future.

Photo: AFP

And he cited five-time Ballon d’Or winner Ronaldo as an example of what Martial could go on to achieve at Old Trafford.

“I’ve been here for 15 years, coach, player, now manager and I know how much this club can give to your career and what you can give to the club,” said United’s interim manager. “I’m here to help the club and I’m just being honest with him that for me this was the best place to be.

“I speak about my experience at this club, what he can achieve at this club because I think I can achieve a lot.

“When you sit him down and talk to him, for example, about Cristiano’s career, what he’s made of his career and how he’s got there and we talk about all the fantastic players with the history they’ve got - I think Anthony just sat down and said, ‘If I can be a part of this I’d like to’. I believe and the club believes we have got a top player there.”

Liverpool to benefit from Markovic departure

Liverpool allowed Lazar Markovic to head to Fulham on a free transfer in the final hours of deadline day.

Photo: Getty

But the Reds are still set to benefit financially from the Serbian’s departure four-and-a-half years on from his £20m arrival from Benfica.

It is believed the club will save over £1.5m in salary and fees having finally rid their wage bill of the hapless forward.

It is 1,371 days since Markovic last appeared for Liverpool in a 2-1 win over QPR at Anfield in May 2015.

Since then, he has spent time on loan at Fenerbahce, Hull City, Sporting Lisbon and Anderlecht.

However, a permanent transfer has failed to materialise each time, with Anderlecht coming the closest to snaring the 24-year-old last summer.

The Belgian club had an agreement in place with Liverpool but a failure to shake hands on personal terms with Markovic ultimately scuppered the deal.

Since then, the wideman had been training at the club’s academy, where he had received praise from coaching staff.

But he will now begin a new chapter at Fulham, where he joins another former Reds winger in Ryan Babel.

Liverpool, meanwhile, must take lessons from their biggest transfer flop in recent memory having finally moved him on.

Solskjear hoping to convince De Gea to stay

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer hopes David de Gea will follow Anthony Martial’s lead and commit his future to Manchester United.

Securing a new contract for the Spain goalkeeper is a priority for Ed Woodward after Martial signed a five-year this week.

Photo: Reuters

Solskjaer played a pivotal role in convincing the France forward to end months of uncertainty and tie himself to Old Trafford.

But talks with De Gea continue to stall, with the 28-year-old holding out for a deal closer to parity with Alexis Sanchez, who earns around £400,000-a-week.

He has told the club that it is his intention to stay, but United are likely to have to make him the highest paid keeper in the world.

Solskjaer said: “The club’s working on a few players. I don’t know how far we are, but it’s a statement from the club we want to keep our best players.”

United’s interim manager revealed the role he is playing in trying to convince players to commit themselves to the club.

Woodward will hope he can have the effect on De Gea as he did on Martial.

Discussing his personal talks with Martial, Solskjaer said: “I’ve been here for 15 years, coach, player, manager and know how much this club can give to your career.

“I made my career, it was easy to sell the club to Anthony, but he knows what we’re capable of.”

Chelsea's Pulisic decision 'staggering' - Allardyce

Former England manager Sam Allardyce has questioned Chelsea's plans in spending £57.6million on Christian Pulisic and allowing him to remain with Borussia Dortmund.

Photo: Getty

The American international will join the Blues over the summer having been loaned back to the German league leaders for the remainder of the season.

Chelsea have managed to keep hold of starlet Callum Hudson-Odoi this month despite interest from Bayern Munich, meaning they are well stocked in attacking areas.

Allardyce, however, questioned Chelsea's thought process, warning that an injury could ruin it all.

"I am staggered and shocked," the former Crystal Palace, Bolton and West Ham manager told Sky Sports News.

"What if he does an ACL [anterior cruciate ligament] over there?

You invest that much money and then you have the settling in period... next season, who knows, he might come in and struggle."

Suarez spoke to Bellerin about Arsenal move

New Arsenal signing Denis Suarez has revealed Hector Bellerin's role in his move to north London.

The Barcelona midfielder joined the Gunners on loan until the end of the season on deadline day after the two clubs agreed on a £2.1million fee. Arsenal will pay a further £20million in the summer should they decide to make the move permanent.

Suarez's arrival has been on the cards for much of the January window, and he revealed his compatriot reached out to him before a deal had been struck.

"I’ve spoken to Hector. He wrote me a message when the rumours started to come out in the press about me joining Arsenal," Suarez told the club website after the deal was confirmed.

"I hope he can recover as soon as possible. It’s a shame that he’s injured because I’d love to play with him, but I’m sure he’ll be back soon."

Markovic a 'gifted young player'

Premier League strugglers Fulham made a surprise swoop for forgotten Liverpool winger Lazar Markovic on a busy transfer deadline day.

The Cottagers also managed to offload controversial forward Aboubakar Kamara and sign Norway international Havard Nordtveit on loan.

The move for Markovic, which was announced after the 11pm Thursday deadline passed, was unexpected. The Serbian has signed on a short-term permanent deal until the end of the season after being released by the Merseysiders.

Markovic failed to make an impression at Anfield after arriving from Benfica in 2014. He made just 34 appearances for the club, scoring three goals, and has had loan spells at has had loans at Fenerbahce, Sporting Lisbon, Hull and Anderlecht in recent seasons.

The Cottagers, 19th in the table and six points off safety, will hope he can give the club a lift.

Vice chairman Tony Khan told the club's website: "Lazar Markovic is a gifted young player. We're pleased to welcome him from Liverpool for the remainder of the season.
"Lazar is known as a great team-mate, he has the support of our manager and he has the talent to strengthen our attack."

Premier League January spending 'falls by £250m'

Premier League clubs spent £180million during the January transfer window - the first time the figure has fallen since 2012, according to football finance experts at Deloitte.

Nearly a third of the total expenditure was accounted for by Chelsea's £55million outlay for Christian Pulisic (below) from Borussia Dortmund.

Last year's winter transfer window saw top flight clubs shell out £430million, with big money moves including Virgil van Dijk at £75million and Aymeric Laporte for £50million.

Getty

However, most of the major transactions this January saw players leaving Premier League sides, with Brahim Diaz moving from Manchester City to Real Madrid for £15.5million, Mousa Dembele moving to Guangzhou R&F from Tottenham for £11million and Schalke shelling out £9.6million for Manchester City's Rabbi Matondo.

Tim Bridge, director in the Sports Business Group at Deloitte, said: "As we approach a decisive phase of the season, Premier League clubs' January transfer spending has been relatively muted in comparison to what we have seen in previous years."

January spending was at £225million in 2011 but fell to £60million in the following year.

It doubled the following year, and remained steady at £130million in 2014 and 2015, before jumping to £175million, £215million and £430million over the last three seasons.

The £180million transfer bill means total gross spending by Premier League clubs in the 2018/19 season is an estimated £1.4billion, the second-highest season ever following record spend of £1.9billion in 2017/18.

Other findings from Deloitte included the so-called Big Six accounting for 43% of the January expenditure, lower than last January when this figure stood at 62%.
Equally, those in the bottom six of the table spent £20million - compared to £70million in the same period last season.

Championship clubs spent £60million in the window, more than double last year's total of £30million, Deloitte added.
